trauma aware yoga
Trauma Aware Yoga model of practice is based on a particular understanding of trauma, one that emphasises its impact to the entire mind-body system, as opposed to particular mental states viewed in isolation from the physical body. When yoga is taught from a trauma aware perspective, a calm and safe environment is facilitated during classes, one that allows support for the parasympathetic nervous system and an increase in effectiveness of ongoing trauma treatment and self-management techniques.
Yoga helps with trauma in many ways but in particular highlights present-state awareness, broadens the window of tolerance and fosters a sense of internal and external connection. It is not a substitute for professional treatment, but it is a great tool in augmenting the flexibility of mind and body. You will be guided to learn emotional regulation skills through connection with the breath and through increased body awareness, rebuilding a feeling of safety in the body.
